A Beautiful Day For A Ride On A New Bike With A Good Woman

The weather pattern here in Dallas the last couple of days he been rain overnight / in the morning, giving way to cloudy skies and cool temps the rest of the day.  But today, the clouds went away with the rain and it was a pleasant 78 degrees for a high with sunny skies and, an unfortunate amount of wind.  My wife and I got rained out of our planned adventure yesterday, so we went for a longish ride today since it was so nice out.

Her Trek Syke S and my new Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc.

We took our usual route to and through Oak Point Nature Preserve in Plano.  Oak Point is a pretty place to ride through and was quite busy today.  Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t pay attention and must figure they are the only ones in the park.  They are the reason we have bells on our bikes.  But, it’s hard to be upset for long when you have this kind of scenery:

Once through the park, we went a different way than normal; one we’d never tried before.  We wound through some neighborhoods (which reminded us a lot of the ones back in Memphis) until we got to Willow Creek Park and used the trail that runs through it to get to 19th St.  From there it was a quick ride to Jupiter Rd. and our first destination…  Dairy Queen!

My reason for going to DQ was the new Mini Blizzard they have been advertising.  For some crazy reason, I thought they were only 99 cents.  WRONG.  Glad I didn’t try to bring the minimum I thought I’d need.  My wife had gotten some extra change off the dresser and we needed it – They are $2.29 each.  In actuality, the size is perfect.  It’s all the ice cream you need to eat.  She got Oreo Cheesecake and I got Strawberry Golden Oreo.

$2.29 of frozen goodness.

After we finished our treats, we headed into downtown Plano via Avenue K.  We rode over by the DART rail station and went to a little plaza area I’ve seen from the street but never been to.  There wasn’t really much there.  A few statue things made from granite and whatever, but there was this metal etching thing -  A view of Plano from 1891.

Plano has grown. A bit.

After that, we decided to turn around and head home.  We headed back by the light rain station.  The light rail is very cool, as you can take your bikes on it as long as it’s not ‘peak’ hours.  That’s what we were going to do yesterday, but the rain squelched our plans.

We took a different route on the first bit of the ride home from Downtown Plano.  Along we way, we passed a Dad and his two teenage sons riding home from the Filmore Pub.  One had a BOB trailer and I started to ask about it, but didn’t.  We left them behind rather quickly but they caught up to us as we tried to do a good deed.  A little Dachshund was running down the middle of 18th Street in front of cars, so Kelley and I stopped and tried to get it to come to us.  No luck, but I did follow it into somebody’s carport in the alleyway.  Hopefully at least it got off the busy street.

We didn’t really have anything else exciting happen on the way home aside from the constantly blowing and sometimes gusting wind coming out of the north.  It really put a beating on Kelley and slowed her down a good bit.  She did kick ass and took the ‘long way’ home when she could have shaved off a mile of the ride when I offered to go home a shorter way.

If you’re into that kind of thing, here’s a map of the ride: http://runkeeper.com/user/cyclochip/activity/17199019 We did 25.70 mi in 02:17:50 hours at 11.19 mi/h according to my computer.

All in all, it was a really fun ride with my wife on a pretty beautiful day.  I wish I could do it again tomorrow.

New Bike Blues. Or, My Legs Are Too Damned Short.

I’ve wanted a new bike for a while now.

I wasn’t really sure what kind I wanted, but I know I wanted a new one.  My wife has gotten two new bikes since I have gotten anything new, so I was a little jealous of her most recent purchase of a Trek Skye S earlier this year.
I’d started eyeing kind of a new thing that more and more manufacturers are making these days – ‘urban’ or ‘city’ bikes.  They have the body positioning and components of a mountain bike with the 700c wheels of a road bike and gearing inbetween the two.  This combination of styles intrigued me because I currently have something akin to this.  The bike I ride around with my wife on is easily the most used of all my bikes.  It’s an old GT Zum 4.0 I picked up locally off eBay.  It’s got 26 inch wheels, a rigid fork (it came with a shitty suspension fork which I replaced with a sweet Kona Project 2 I picked up for $20) and slick tires.  But, it’s got lower gearing than most mountain bikes, so even when I ride with my wife, I am just a few gears away from maxing out.  It’s a fun bike, but a lot slower than I’d like.  But, we’ve got a lot of things going on with our house right now and we’re in savings mode, so I was just living with what I had.

Then the most wonderful woman in the world (A.K.A. – my wife) gets one of her semi-regular bonuses at work.  And calls me to tell me she wants to buy me a bike.  So bike shopping we go.

I had already picked out my ‘dream bike’ in my head (Well, realistic dream, anyway) so we went to REI to check it out.  I was a bit worried about the sizing, but I hoped I could get it to work with some swapping of parts and adjustments.
You might ask why I would need to work so hard to get a bike to fit me…  I’m kind of short.  Specifically, short in the leg department.  I have a 29″ inseam.  And I’m trying to fit on a bike that has 29″ wheels.  Hopefully, you can see the problem.

We went to REI and test rode the Marin Muirwoods 29er.  Just look at this thing:

Marin Muirwoods 29er

O.M.G.  So awesome.  Pure secks.  All black, discs, tough…  TOO BIG.  The smallest frame size they make in this bike is a 17″ frame.  Try as he might, the very knowledgeable wrench at the Dallas REI store couldn’t make it work.  Nobody could have – It’s just too big.  That was a major bummer.  But, I was undaunted…

I looked around and found the GT Traffic 1.0 sold at Performance Bike Shops.  This is a special order bike of theirs that they don’t normally carry in the store.  It wasn’t quite as cool looking at the Marin, but it did have better components and pretty much the same stylings.  We guessed at the size I’d need (We ordered a Small frame since they didn’t have one in shop for me to test ride) and I paid my money.  When it finally came in and I picked up up, I was plesantly surprised.  This was one sweet bike.  It was a little big for me, but I wanted to make it work, so I took it home and tinkered.  And tinkered.  To no avail.

GT Traffic 1.0

I couldn’t even raise the seatpost high enough to get my seat bag and my blinky light on there.  Much less a seatpost mounted rack, if I chose to go that way occasionally.  I did one 10 mile ride on it and came to the realization I just didn’t have to room between the seat and the top tube that I needed / wanted / was comfortable with.  So back it went.
I returned it and ordered the XS frame size, sight unseen.  I figured it would be just right for me.  It turned out to be pretty much the right size…  But the design of the fram was horrible.  I can only compare it to a ladies’s bike.  To make the top tube low enough, they make it go down just about parellel to the downtube and then about 3/4 of the way down it made a L shape and went the rest of the way into the seattube.  It looked goofy as hell.  Embarassing, even.  For a guy’s bike anyway.  But I was determined to get used to it.  The bike rode SO AWESOME I could get used to the stupid look of it.  But I came to find out there was something I couldn’t get past.  The design of the frame didn’t allow you to use a full sized water bottle / cage.  And that, my friends, is a deal breaker.  My rides with my wife are mostly 10-20 mile outings and I don’t want to carry a Camelbak on them.  No way I could do without a water bottle.
So, after a week of being worried about taking a bike back AGAIN to Performance, I finally had to man up and do it.  Of course, they took it back no questions asked and no hassels whatsoever.  Great people there at the Performance Bike Shop in Plano.

Now I’m looking at a variation of the bike I wanted…  Well, pretty much the same thing, only with a suspension fork.  I’ve got my eye on two bikes, the GT Transeo 2.0 Disc and the Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc.  This kind of bike will allow me to consolidate my current neighborhood ride bike and my cyclocross bike into one awesome go anywhere, do just about anything, fast on the road beast.

Now if I can just get one of these two to fit my legs, I’ll be a happy camper.

Fri, Jul 30, 2010 – 12.40 mi [Cycling]

12.40 mi in 01:03:59 hours at 11.63 mi/h. [Cycling] After work ride with Kelley. Regular route to downtown Allen with a trip around Story Park for good measure. Saw lots of bunny rabbits tonight and one lady walking down the trail with headphones on and reading a book. Makes perfect sense to me.

Music Video Friday

Knocking the dust off this thing…

This could possibly be the best song ever.  OK, maybe not EVAR.  But damn, it rocks.  Video ain’t tooooo bad.  It’s got Selma Blair and Elijah Wood in it, which is pretty rad for a band you’ve never heard of.  I give you…  Dank Jone – “Full Of Regret”

I told you the song was awesome.

Mon, Jun 14, 2010 – 11.30 mi [Cycling]

11.30 mi in 00:58:46 hours at 11.54 mi/h on GT Zum 4.0. [Cycling] After work ride on the Chisholm Trail. Dunno if it was the heat (honestly, it wasn’t THAT hot) or what, but the trail was pretty empty tonight. More room for us. :) Nothing very special, just a decent ride.
